About Miss Rebecca Ford

Rebecca is a nationally and internationally renowned oculoplastic surgeon based in Bristol UK. She has more than 15 years experience specialising in all aspects of eyelid, lacrimal and orbital surgery. She received an NHS National Clinical Impact Award in 2023.

Rebecca's background and credentials

Rebecca Ford has been a consultant oculoplastic surgeon in Bristol Eye Hospital since 2014. 

After studying medical sciences at Cambridge she qualified in clinical medicine from Oxford University in 1997. She completed an internal medicine rotation in Plymouth gaining membership of the Royal College of Physicians before registrar training in ophthalmology in London, including the world famous Moorfields Eye Hospital. She did oculoplastics fellowships in Brighton and Birmingham for a year each and worked as a consultant in Aberdeen and Birmingham before moving to Bristol.

 

She has provided a regional referral service in orbital surgery and complex oculoplastics for the South West for the last ten years, and is experienced in all aspects of oculoplastic surgery. She enjoys working with specialists in related fields and is a founder member of the Bristol Cranio-orbital Skull Base Group. She previously served as Clinical Director of Bristol Eye Hospital.

 

Her other passion is medical education. She has a Masters in Surgical Education from Imperial College London and  is the current Chair of Education at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. She is also the Head of School for the Severn School of Ophthalmology. She has been supervised around twenty fellows from around the world for advanced training in oculoplastics and finds this one of the most rewarding aspects of her NHS work.

Rebecca has a special interest in thyroid eye disease and is the Committee Chair of the Thyroid Eye Disease Charitable Trust, a charity that supports people with TED and promotes education and research about the condition. She has also done charity teaching work in China with Lifeline Express and Indonesia with RCOphth, as well as volunteering in Cambodia through Khmer Sight.

Rebecca's subspecialty training fellowship years were in Brighton and Birmingham. This provided an excellent grounding in the eyelid, lacrimal and orbital surgery with high volume surgical experience.
